| Peter Helton II (1720-1802)Peter Helton II was the son of Peter Helton (1686-1757). Based on the naming traditions of the day, Peter II would probably have been Peter's third son. We do know that there was a John Helton in Orange County in the 1790 census, along with Peter I and since Peter wife's (Hannah Hawkins) was named James Hawkins, James Helton would probably have been the name of Peter II's second oldest brother. Peter's oldest brother (perhaps John?) would have been named after Peter I's father using the old naming traditions. There were two Peter Hilton's in neighboring Guilford County North Carolina in the 1790 Census. It is unclear of their relationship to Peter Helton, if any. It is highly possible that these Peter Helton's in Guilford County were Grandson, or Nephews of Peter I. They could have been Peter II first cousins Peter II had three sons and eight daughters according to his will. His sons were named Abraham, Peter, and James. Eight daughters and he still managed to live until 82 years old!
Because of the large number of Peter Helton's in this area at this time, many Helton's with an interest in genealogy have laid claim to Peter I and Peter II in Orange County, North Carolina. This may cause problems for them in creating brick walls in their research and can make it difficult for others. Since none of us know the exact extent of documentation that other Helton's may use to base their conclusions, we each can be side tracked by inaccurate information that others use. It is our hope that the Hilton Family Tree website can help others find a source for finding data and realize where other data exists. For example, my own James Helton and His son Abraham (father/son Washington County GA), were confused for many years with Abraham and James Helton of Habersham County GA (father/son 1820 US Census). Many of the Washington County data was attached to the Habersham branch. It took 7 years and DNA testing to correct this error, unblock my own brick wall, and get back on track. For instance, examine the table below. Indiana child (Peter Helton) had brothers and sisters born before and after in North Carolina, yet his birthplace is identified as Clay Indiana. As we learn more about Peter II from Helton's who have been researching Peter for many years, we will add this data to this page.
