Many Helton's trace their lineage to Peter Helton of Orange County South Carolina. However, the truth may be that since Peter Helton's Grandfather (Richard Hilton) is the oldest and considered the first Helton in America, every Helton tries to tie their roots to Peter. If he had as many offspring as everyone claims, he would truly be the father of our country. However, our DNA Testing have definitely tied our Hilton line to Peter Helton Sr.

Peter Helton Sr. was born in 1686 and died before 1757 in Orange Co, North Carolina. Peter married Hannah Hawkins in 1717 (Daughter of James Hawkins). Peter is buried in Old Brock Church, Guilford, North Carolina. Since James of Randolph County was probably born in 1775 and peter Sr. died in 1757, two generations probably separated James and Peter Sr.

What is unclear at this time is where James Helton ties in to Peter. We suspect that James' grandfather was named Peter or Abraham and son of Peter Sr. There is a some possibility that Peter Sr. had an eldest son named James or John who moved to South Carolina. However, the probability is much higher that James was the son or Grandson of Abraham based on the old naming patterns. (James named his oldest son Abraham and second son Thomas and third son James--4th son was John Conelas and would have been named after father's oldest brother).

Peter Helton II (son of Peter I) was born in 1720. Peter I would have been about 55 years old when James of Randolph County was born around 1775. However, Abraham, a Peter II son was born in 1760 when Peter II was 40 years old. If these dates are accurate, Abraham would have been too young (15 years old) to father James of Randolph County.

Another possibility is that Peter II had older brothers named Abraham (son of Peter Sr.), John and James and a younger brother named Thomas. James of Randolph descended from a brother of Peter II. This is much more likely. James would probably have been the second son of Peter Sr. and was named for the father (James Hawkins) of his wife (old naming tradition), Hannah Hawkins. Abraham, oldest son of Peter Sr, would have been named after the father of Peter Sr. This actually gives us a clue to follow before Peter Sr. in 1686.

Using the old naming patterns as a primary key to the puzzle, James of Randolph County would probably been the Son of Abraham-Peter Sr's oldest or 2nd son. James of Randolph then continued the naming pattern by naming his oldest son after his father-Abraham. Using this same tradition, James' 4th son was named Thomas Peter after his fathers oldest brother, in this case, both brothers, Thomas and Peter. James of Randolph named his son's Abraham, John, James, Thomas. John Conelas, as 4th son, was probably named for his father's oldest brother.

This fills in more blanks than you might realize (if you're not completely confused right now). There was some sanity to the naming pattern. However, it always helped to know the father of the mother, since the second son was almost always named after the maternal grandfather. This also helped prevent completely using repeating the same names. The first son was almost always named for the paternal grandfather, which helps us trace the line and confirm assumptions.

Orange County is only about 40 miles North of Camden County South Carolina where we find a possible evidence Washington County GA connection. Peter Helton Sr., Peter Helton, Abraham, Helton, and James Helton, all show up on 1800 Census records for Orange County North Carolina. here is what we know about the records.

Peter Helton I probably had at least 3 sons with as many as 5, possible. We know that Peter II was a son and would have been the third son based on the naming traditions of the day. We can assume the second son of Peter I would have been named after James Hawkins, his father in law. Based on the naming of Peter II's children and James children (using the name Abraham) we may be able to assume that Peter I's father was named Abraham. The oldest son would have taken the father's father's name. Then by succession the third or fourth son would take the fathers oldest brothers name. The name Abraham is used far too often in this family without some paternal significance. John Helton is found in 1790 Census records, as well, and this name is repeated throughout the Helton family at regular intervals. Granted, John is a more popular name than Abraham, but this family believed in and used the old naming traditions as a rule.
